Each summer, the Center for Advanced Studies supports the research activities of two or more faculty members. This program is available to all faculty at the Academy – civilian, permanent military, and rotating military. It is highly competitive and provides the faculty an opportunity for focused effort on their research.
The selection is based on proposals submitted by the faculty to the Center for Advanced Studies each fall semester.

“From ‘Known Unknown’ to ‘Known Known’: Replacing Anecdotes with Systematic Evidence on Congressional Candidates, Inspectors General, and Ambassadors”
Supported by the Center for Advanced Studies Summer Fellowship and initial work done by 3/c cadets in my Social Science Research Methods course in Spring 2015, I collected data on candidates in congressional primaries, inspectors general in federal executive branch agencies, and U.S. ambassadors. For congressional candidates, I worked with a colleague from Vanderbilt University, Bruce Oppenheimer, to find biographical details on over 1100 candidates for open congressional seats from 2006 to 2014. Using the Congressional Record and agency press releases, I collected nomination, confirmation, and resignation details on all inspector general appointments from 1981-2015. And for ambassadorial nominees and vacancies, I am still collecting data on campaign contributions, entry on duty and end of duty dates, and biographical details for ambassadors from 1981 to 2015. These new data provide the basis for empirically evaluating hypotheses about political and policy decisions in each of these three key areas of American politics.
The main objective for each of the three elements of the project was to collect data to facilitate empirical evaluation of both existing and newly developed theories about political phenomena. Then I planned to prepare and submit three paper proposals to prominent political science conferences; following the conferences, I would revise and then submit the papers for publication. An important goal of the entire process was to involve cadets at each phase of the research process—from developing research questions, thinking and articulating theories, deriving testable hypotheses, collecting and analyzing data, and making inferences from the results.
