Hello! My name is Emily Dow, I am from Topsfield, Massachusetts and I live there with my Mom and Dad. I am in the Class of 2018! No one in my family went to a military academy (a few were in the military), but the nature of an academy was foreign to all of us. I visited 26 small, private colleges on the East Coast, but then my high school softball coach, who was a graduate of the Academy, recommended I look into the CGA. I toured the campus, the Eagle while she was in Boston, stayed overnight during Cadet for a Day and talked with many cadets, past and present. The family atmosphere and tough academic rigor were exactly what I was looking for, with an adventurous and all around great job waiting on the other end when I graduate as a commissioned officer. I am a pitcher on the softball team and in the horn line in our drum and bugle corps, the Windjammers. I am a Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering major, and can’t wait to get into the engineering classes starting this semester and beyond.
So far, I have found some things to be more difficult than others, but it all depends on your attitude, and how you handle the challenges thrown at you. I already see that the Academy is preparing us to be able to handle any problems that are headed in our direction, and that is one of the most useful life skills you should have.
I love answering any questions about softball, Windjammers, Swab Summer and the Academy in general! My email is Emily.A.Dow@uscga.edu.
