Hello everyone! I’m Brandon Horacek, a 2/c here at the USCGA. I’m a Mechanical Engineering major and with the time I have left, I manage to participate in Windjammers, Aviation Club, Archery Club, the Aft Steering Brass Band, and run the Drama Club. My dad was an AMT in the Coast Guard so I lived in several places as a kid, but now I call Houston, Texas home with my parents, my brother and sister, and my dog, Bella.
My road to the Academy wasn’t always set in stone, not by a long shot. I didn’t even know about the Academy until my junior year of high school, and even then I thought I’d just do the five-year commitment and retire. However, since then I’ve fallen in love with the Coast Guard, its people, and its mission; I couldn’t be happier with my decision to come here! My goal upon graduation is now to attend flight school and become a helicopter pilot.
One of my biggest concerns coming into the Academy was that I wouldn’t be able to continue being my own person, and that I’d have to conform to be the “uptight military type.” If that’s what you think, don’t worry! Yes, there are a few rules to follow, but there are still plenty of ways at the CGA to express yourself and embrace your passions if you just look for them. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me at Brandon.M.Horacek@uscga.edu, I’ll be happy to talk about anything you want!
