Aloha! I am Kody Kekoa and I hail from the great state of Hawaii. I have the best parents and a younger sister, Kiana (17) who is wrapping up her final year of high school.
Throughout high school, I was set on going to a massive, Division-I college. I had visions of having a lifestyle similar to National Lampoon’s Animal House. However, when I reached my senior year, the reality of college set my thought process back to square one. I had no idea what I was going to do. Paying for college on the mainland United States was going to burn an eternal hole in my pocket, but I told myself that I was going to travel the world; therefore I was not going to attend college in Hawaii. I proceeded to apply for different colleges, including the Coast Guard Academy. I was offered the Coast Guard Academy Scholars Program. Throughout the acceptance process, I always envisioned what I would be doing in 20 years, had I gone to a civilian college versus the Academy. Ultimately, I felt that the Coast Guard path was going to be an adventure that the other options could not compare with, and so far it has blown my expectations out of the water.
Like those before me have said, the greatest knowledge that I have for you is that anyone with the right determination and attitude can get in. If you have the slightest interest in the Academy, I say go for it!
