Elaina “Tessa” Koenig
Ethel, WA Major: Electrical Engineering
I started looking into the Academy because I met several former “Coasties” who shared stories of adventure and wonderful coworkers. After researching, I applied because I wanted to join a tight-knit group of people working to better themselves and their global community. My family supported me by giving me space to research and make my own decision about what I wanted to do after high school. When I decided that I wanted to attend the Academy my family and community supported me by sending letters of encouragement (and snacks) during Swab Summer and the school year.
I chose Electrical Engineering as my major because growing up I had a family friend who was able to build anything, from a goose- targeting sprinkler to an electric hydrofoil; there was no project he could not create. I saw the ideas that he was able to bring to life and knew I wanted to be able to do that. Electronics have become so integral to our society, it seems like every project today has some electrical component to it, so I decided that I wanted to learn as much as I could about how these systems work and how I can use them. What I love the most about my major is how the cadets work together on classwork and problems. It is a close group of cadets who are all very supportive of each other.
When I applied, I did not realize how much the admissions staff does and how interactive and willing to talk to prospective students they are. So don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions if you’re considering applying. Also reflect on what things are helpful to you. Whether it is something motivational like your reason for applying to the Academy or something you find calming when you are stressed, knowing your personal identity will help you feel confident that you made the right decision.
