Gig Harbor, WA Major: Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering
Living in a small harbor in Washington State, I would always see the Coast Guard around the harbor making sure everyone was being safe. I also lived next to the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, and I’ve seen the Coast Guard try and save bridge jumpers. These missions resonated with me and inspired me to join the Coast Guard.
Upon entering the Academy, it was certainly a challenge to get used to not seeing my family. We are very close, and I spent a lot of time with my siblings before I came here, so my greatest challenge was overcoming the loneliness I felt at the beginning. As I started making friends and meeting people, I soon realized that this was my family away from home. I have also found a sense of family within my major, Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering (NAME). I get to design boats which I love. NAME pushes you to think at a higher level and drives you out of your comfort zone, and at the end, it is very rewarding to see your project succeed.
