The U.S. Coast Guard Academy, located in New London, Connecticut, is seeking up to four (4) passionate educators in the School of Engineering and Cyber Systems.

Appointment Type: These will be appointments in the excepted service as Academic Division faculty members assigned to a 12-month work schedule for an initial period not to exceed 54 weeks. Non-competitive extensions of the appointments may be possible in accordance with SUPTINST 12300.2d and SUPTINST 12330.A.

The Academy provides the professional education and training required to prepare young women and men for careers as commissioned officers in the U. S. The Coast Guard Academy is seeking up to four (4) consummate engineering and computing professionals with a strong desire to educate, train, develop and inspire students who will serve as future leaders in the U.S. Coast Guard and beyond. The desired start date is July 15, 2023.

The successful candidate will teach core engineering courses, computing courses, and/or upper division courses in the School of Engineering and Cyber Systems according to the background of the selectee. Teaching load will be 9-12 contact hours per semester. Potential courses include (but are not limited to) engineering mechanics (Statics, Mechanics of Materials, Dynamics), Fluid Mechanics, Electrical Circuits & Machines, Introduction to Computing, Thermodynamics, and Engineering Material Science. The selectee may also be assigned to teach summer courses, participate in outreach activities, and assist with senior capstone design projects or undergraduate research as well as be involved in course and program assessment activities. Supervisors will also assign collateral duties related to academic enrichment and the development of future Coast Guard Officers.
MIMIMUM Educational requirements:
Master’s Degree in an engineering or computing discipline closely related to programs offered in the School of Engineering and Cyber Systems at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy to support teaching undergraduate courses in one or more of the following academic departments: Electrical Engineering & Computing, Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Civil & Environmental Engineering.
MINIMUM Specialized experience:
In addition to the MINIMUM education, the following qualifications are highly desirable:
- Professional experience, a Professional Engineers License (or similar credential), undergraduate teaching experience, and/or a doctoral degree.
- Communication and teamwork skills, the ability to show initiative, and the ability to be adaptable in the context of a student-centered institution.
- Classroom experience teaching and mentoring diverse student populations, and/or experience promoting diversity initiatives, including efforts at creating communities of inclusion
- Interpersonal, teaching and effective written and oral communications skills are essential.
