In her study of Management at the Academy, Sydney Vignola has appreciated how applicable the major is, as she looks ahead to the many management responsibilities she will encounter in her future Coast Guard career.
On the importance of management
“The Management major equips you with valuable skills. It teaches you the most important lesson any officer graduating from the Academy should learn, and that’s how to manage people.”
On an attentive faculty
“I am so impressed with how much time and effort faculty put into helping their students. All of my teachers have made themselves available for me, whether I had a quick question on an assignment or I had to meet with them for an hour when I didn’t understand
a certain topic.”
On practical learning
“While many projects in the Management major are beneficial, my favorite was the “Mock Shark Tank” Project. It was a hands-on group project where we experienced the many challenges and rewards of starting a new business – from finance to employees to
customer service.”
On the applicability of management
“The Management major is beneficial in so many ways. These are skills that will prepare me well – for the Coast Guard, my own personal finance, and if I should decide to go into a corporate job after the Coast Guard.”
