School of Leadership and Management
The School of Leadership and Management (SLM) provides a high-quality business education for Management majors, and prepares all cadets for the rigors of professional service in the U.S. Coast Guard. The mission of the School is to prepare future commissioned officers to serve as competent and ethical management professionals, and maritime officers. The School is guided by the needs of the Service to ensure officers are well-prepared for their future roles as stewards of public resources. Scholarship focuses on management practice-related research in areas such as leadership, organizational effectiveness, mentoring, and the scholarship of teaching and learning. The School works closely with the Loy Institute for Leadership.
AACSB has recognized the School continuously since 2006. AACSB is the premier accrediting body for collegiate schools of business and accounting.

December 2024
In an excellent game against MIT, 1/c Declan Rooney scored his 1000th career point to become just the 22nd man in Coast Guard men’s basketball history to reach said mark. Coach Kevin Jaskiewicz had the following to say about 1/c Rooney after the historic milestone: “Declan is one of the hardest workers I have coached here at the Academy. He has earned every point he has recorded and he is a great example for the younger players". BZ!

December 2024
Dr. Mel Graf recently was published in “The Journal of Character and Leadership Development”. Her writing focused on her time on the Coast Guard’s training ship USCGC EAGLE, and how the platform plays a vital role in the leadership curriculum at the Academy. November 2024
1/c Joey Armentrout capped off his time as the Bears starting quarterback leading the Coast Guard Academy football team to a 42-21 victory against Kings Point and taking back the Secretary’s cup to New London for the first time since 2018. 1/c Armentrout finished his season setting Coast Guard Academy records, throwing 8,357 yards and 55 touchdowns throughout his outstanding career.

June 2024
3/c Nate Stafford finished his historic rookie season as a member of the Coast Guard baseball team being named the d3baseball Rookie of the Year. In addition to this prestigious honor, the standout first baseman was also named NEWMAC player of the year, NEWMAC rookie of the year, and set both the Coast Guard baseball RBI and Hits single season records. BZ 3/c Stafford!

June 2024
In collaboration with multiple other authors, Dr. Matt Keblis published a paper on the investigation of whether risk aversion, risk seeking, loss aversion, or prospect theory could explain the ordering decisions in multiechelon supply chains. Results came through the use of laboratory experiments with participants from universities in both the United States and Australia, the full work being able to be viewed here.

May 2024
Dr. Jack White recently published a paper titled “Sabbatical leave in the private sector: An employee benefit that can be a cost saver.” Sabbatical leave is a benefit that is commonly associated with higher education but is rarely found in the private sector. Through his research, Dr. White explored the benefits to firms offering sabbaticals to their employees and provided a framework for businesses to compare search and hiring costs with the costs of a sabbatical program. April 2024
In April of 2023, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the Japan Coast Guard Academy signed a letter of intent to formally recognize a long-standing partnership and to signify the two institution’s commitment to working together in developing both America’s and Japan’s future maritime leaders. In April of 2024, CDR Go Ichimiya, an instructor stationed at the Japan Coast Guard Academy paid a weeklong visit to the School of Leadership in Management as part of the two-service academy’s collaborative efforts. During the visit CDR Go observed a number of Management courses, the Nautical Science simulators in action, daily cadet life (such as drill exercises), and even practiced with CGA’s boxing team!

April 2024
LCDR Peter Imbriale recently co-authored a paper with two colleagues from Bentley University, that was accepted for publication at the Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Economics. The paper explores the impact of media reports and/or education about the impacts of an in-kind donation on post-disaster donor behavior. March 2024
1/c Kira Wood scored her 1,000th career point in a win against Clark, becoming only the 11th player in coast guard women’s basketball history to reach such an accomplishment. She finished the season being named second team all-conference, BZ for an amazing career! 1/c Wood will soon wrap up her time in the Management major and head to Texas to be a Deck Watch Officer on the USCGC HAROLD MILLER.
