Name: Virlyn Gibson
At first, my family was unsure about how to feel about me studying so far from home at the Coast Guard Academy, given how close-knit we are. But over time, the idea grew on them, and they supported me in every way possible. Upon arriving at the Coast Guard Academy, the biggest challenge I had to overcome was learning not to be afraid to ask for help. I’ve always been a bit shy and introverted, especially around new people. However, I’ve learned that things here are designed to be easier when you work together. It took me a while to figure that out—and I still remind myself of it from time to time. If you’re thinking of applying to the Academy, don’t deny yourself the opportunity to be part of something bigger than yourself and to build a network of capable, forward-thinking leaders. If I can do it, so can you!
