Welcome to the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (CAIML)
The Center for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (CAIML) serves as the U.S. Coast Guard’s focal point for trusted, mission-driven AI innovation and education. Located on the campus of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, the Center operates under the Office of Scholarship, Research, and Innovation (OSRI) in close coordination with the Office of Data and AI (CG-ODA) and the Technology Readiness Directorate (CG-TECH). CAIML represents a strategic investment in responsible operational readiness, technological advantage, education, and future workforce development, directly supporting the tenets of Force Design 2028.
Core Pillars and Strategic Efforts
CAIML organizes its mission around three primary operational lines of effort:
- Rapid Use Case Development & Solution Prototyping: Accelerates the delivery of AI solutions by pairing Coast Guard officers alongside Academy faculty and subject matter experts to design, prototype, and transition tools directly to operational and support missions. Projects target a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) within 6 months, reducing early-stage reliance on external vendors.
- Basic & Applied Research: Investigates AI/ML applications ranging from core algorithm discovery to novel educational methods. By leveraging faculty scholarship, cadet capstone projects, and peer-reviewed publications, the Center strengthens the Coast Guard’s technical credibility and long-term innovation pipeline.
- Faculty & Workforce Upskilling: Enhances workforce readiness across military and civilian personnel by building confidence and proficiency in CG-approved AI tools. In partnership with CG-ODA, CAIML shapes fleet-wide guidance for responsible AI use while raising baseline proficiency among Academy cadets and faculty to ensure future leaders adopt technology ethically with discipline, transparency, and mission focus.

- Advanced Computing Power: CAIML houses a state-of-the-art AI computing platform to power high-level research, training, and use case development.
- National Network of Excellence: Situated within a collaborative ecosystem, CAIML collaborates with leading research institutions and government partners.
