The U.S. Coast Guard Academy Department of Culture and Languages invites applications for a tenure track position as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor of Writing and Digital Humanities. The department seeks a candidate who can bridge writing, oral communication, and digital humanities. Rank at hire will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience. The desired start date is August 10, 2026.

This is an appointment in the excepted service as a tenure track faculty member on a 10-month work schedule for an initial period not to exceed three years, with extensions and a permanent appointment contingent on successful progress and tenure reviews. The first two years of appointment to federal service is a trial period. The work schedule is full-time. This position is not eligible for telework and not eligible for remote work. All teaching is done in person. Relocation expenses are authorized. Occasional travel is required.
Salary offers may be made outside of the listed range for exceptional candidates.
The successful candidate will: 1) Teach courses in College Composition, Writing, Rhetoric, and Digital Humanities; 2) Develop cadet communication mastery -writing, speaking, reading, and listening as core officer competencies; 3) Advise senior capstone projects connecting writing, rhetoric, digital methods, and Coast Guard operational needs; 4) Prepare cadets to integrate digital fluency and ethical decision-making into leadership and mission execution; 5) Contribute to new Humanities initiatives and enrich ongoing cross-disciplinary projects that benefit from a human-centered perspective; and 6) Contribute to the Coast Guard’s mission to field ready, adaptive, and resilient leaders.
- Doctoral degree in one of the following: Composition and Rhetoric, Writing Studies, Digital Humanities, English, Communications, Comparative Literature, Media Studies, or a closely related field. ABD candidates must include a letter in the application from the applicant’s major professor attesting that the candidate will complete all requirements for the Ph.D. before June 12, 2026.
- Experience teaching undergraduate courses.
- Experience teaching first-year College Composition or other first-year writing/communication courses at the college level as the instructor of record is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience teaching Digital Humanities (e.g., text mining, corpus analysis, ArcGIS, data visualization, AI and writing, other analytical software) or developing Digital Humanities research projects.
- Publications/Conference Presentations on written or oral communication and/or Digital Humanities.
- Coursework taken or taught in Artificial Intelligence and Writing (or AI and the Humanities).
- Experience leading undergraduate student research, particularly in interdisciplinary projects.
- Demonstrated interest in global, cross-cultural, or intercultural projects.
- Demonstrable experience consistent with a full commitment to the Coast Guard’s core values of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty.
