Before Swab Summer, I thought that I had a good idea of what it would be like. Living decently close to the academy, I was lucky enough to have opportunities to attend events on campus, including AIM and Bears Day. I knew without doubt that I would be put to the test- both physically and mentally. Nothing can truly prepare you for the experience you will begin, but I will give you information and tips I hope you find useful before Swab Summer.
One of the most important things to do before Swab Summer is preparing physically. During Swab Summer, your days will be filled with running to various parts of campus, up flights of stairs, and standing for extended periods of time. The cadre will make you do lots of push-ups, carry heavy bags, and do static holds. It is important to work on your strength and to do cardio before the summer. It can also be helpful to practice taking the PFE before the summer.
An aspect I was worried about was not knowing enough before coming to the academy. I considered buying a running light online before the summer, however that is not necessary. I did know the CGA mission and ethos before the summer, which are required to be known by swabs on the first or second day. You will have plenty of time to study the running light on the bulkhead during the summer.
Changing your mindset is also important before entering Swab Summer. During the summer, you will get yelled at a lot. The cadre will somehow find something wrong; whether it is your inability to be loud, your uniform, or if you are too slow to complete a task. However, failure is the goal of Swab Summer. The job of the cadre is to break you down and build you up to be stronger, be able to work as a team, and overall prepared to be a cadet. Do not take anything personal as the cadre only want you to succeed.
Before Swab Summer, it is important to get everything done on time. There is a lot asked of you before the summer including paperwork and packing. Make sure that you keep the paperwork in a folder so that you do not lose it. Finish these tasks on time so that you are not stressed out in the days leading up to R-day.
For packing, be sure to include only the items on the list or things that are necessary for you- do not overpack! Ensure you get two pairs of sneakers and break them in before the summer. Also label your items with a sharpie or stamp. Get good pairs of white socks that at least go up to mid-calf. They may look silly, however in the summer you will have to put your running light in your sock when transporting, so this will ensure that it will not fall out.
Be sure to bring materials to write letters. Collect the addresses of your friends/family before the summer so that you can write to them, and vice versa. It makes your day when you receive a letter from your loved ones during the summer. If you think you are going to run out of items or want snacks, you can write a letter, and your loved ones can send you care packages.
For me, I was lucky to have my family attend Mystic Flag Day, which was in the middle of the summer, and was able to enjoy time with them for a few hours. If able, I would recommend parents to attend this, as it means a lot for the swabs. Also, look out for Pduddy, and other Swab Summer photographers on Facebook. They post great pictures of swabs, and it definitely made my parents happy to see pictures of me!
Lastly, ensure that you spend your last weeks at home with your family and friends. Go out to your favorite restaurants, go on a trip, and just enjoy this time and be in the moment. It will be difficult to not see them and time with them is valuable.
Whether you are considering applying to the academy or are packing for Swab Summer, I wish you the best of luck! It is a process, and Swab Summer will be a challenge. However, you can do it: every cadet goes through it, and it is worth it. Do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!
