William Kayes: Post-AIM Reflection

William Kayes

Describe your initial impression of AIM in five words or less.
Overwhelming, Stressful, Exhilarating, Rewarding, Unforgettable

What was the most interesting thing you learned about the Academy that you didn’t already know?

The most interesting thing I learned about the United States Coast Guard Academy was how challenging it was to eat without looking at our food during meals. I was also pleasantly surprised by the opportunity to go sailing. I took on different roles, from raising the sails to steering the boat, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I hope to spend more time sailing in the future.

What was your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?

My biggest challenge was processing the overwhelming amount of information thrown at me on the first day. I overcame it by breaking everything down into smaller, manageable parts and mentally organizing each task. As the days went on, this strategy helped me think more clearly, respond more quickly, and maintain a more structured routine both mentally and physically.

Looking back, would you have done anything different to prepare yourself for AIM?

Looking back, I would’ve spent more time practicing how to stay calm under pressure. AIM can be intense, and maintaining military bearing in high-stress situations, like being reprimanded by the cadre, requires more than just physical preparation. Developing mental discipline beforehand would have helped me handle those moments with more composure.

Can you identify a noticeable difference in yourself after attending AIM? If so, what?

After AIM, I’ve noticed that I work faster and more efficiently. My thought process is more organized, and I’ve developed a habit of keeping both my space and my mind structured. That sense of order has stayed with me beyond the program.

Would you recommend attending AIM? Why?

Absolutely. If you’re considering a service academy, AIM gives you the most realistic preview of what that life entails. It challenges you mentally, physically, and emotionally. The program helps you determine if this is truly the right path for your future. It’s an experience I’ll never forget, and one I’m grateful for.
