William Kayes: Pre-AIM Reflection

William Kayes | July 30, 2025

William KayesHow did you hear of the Coast Guard Academy?
I’ve always been interested in going to a service academy, and while I was researching the different branches, my counselor suggested I check out the Coast Guard Academy. That’s when I found the AIM
summer program for rising seniors. The more I read about it, the more I realized it would be an awesome
way to see what academy life is really like—and figure out if this is the right path for me.

What is the #1 thing you’ve done to prepare for AIM

I’ve been working hard to stay in shape—running, doing bodyweight workouts, and keeping a routine
to get ready for the physical side of AIM. I’ve also done a lot of reading about the Coast Guard’s mission and what life at the Academy is like. I want to show up ready and make the most of this experience.

What do you expect to have in common with your fellow AIMsters?

I think most of us will share the same goals: we want to serve our country, we’re curious (and excited) about academy life, and we’re probably all a little nervous but ready to step up. I’m looking forward to meeting people who are just as motivated and driven as I am.

What are you most looking forward to?

Honestly, I’m just excited to get a real taste of what it’s like to live and train at the Coast Guard Academy. I want to challenge myself, see what it’s like to be part of something bigger, and find out if this
is the right fit for my future.

Any hesitations about your AIM week?

I’m incredibly excited about AIM and have been looking forward to it all summer. My only hesitation is
wanting to meet the high standards and expectations that come with representing the Academy—I hope
to rise to the challenge and give my absolute best.

What do your peers think about your service academy aspirations?

Most of my friends think it’s pretty cool. They know it’s not an easy path and that it takes a lot of
commitment. Some of them are surprised I want to do something this intense, but they’ve been super
supportive, and that helps a lot.
