After a fun and eventful winter break it was without a doubt hard to come back. Going from the comfort of my home and being a civilian on Long Island, NY back to New London CT was a hard transition. I was enjoying time with my family and friends, living on my own schedule, and relaxing after a stressful semester. I honestly wasn’t ready to go back. I wasn’t excited to brace up and square my corners, have command watching my every move, or be swamped with both academic and military obligations. The ferry ride back I was nervous, it felt like day 1 all over again.
This is how I felt leading up to my arrival at Chase Hall, however the second I opened my room door my attitude changed at the sight of my roommates waiting for me. It was so exciting seeing everyone from my company again and I was reminded of what is so important to me at the Academy – my shipmates. I was reminded that no matter what challenges the new semester brought, everyone was there to support and pick each other up. You are never doing anything alone. I was excited for a new semester schedule and the rigorous demands. More importantly I was ready after a restful break, returning with a fresh start and new opportunities.
As I was eating dinner with my roommates while debriefing our winter break adventures, I was reminded of how grateful I am for where I am today. My previous complaints and nerves completely left my mind because of the blessings I had around me. All the hard work through my life and help from others is what got me to where I am today, and I am incredibly happy with my decision. What has got me through my 4/c year is saying it’s what you make of it. Everything you do with a positive and hardworking attitude will help you succeed at the United States Coast Guard Academy and as a future Officer.
