Emma MacCartney: Post-AIM Reflection

Emma MacCartney | July 10, 2026

Emma MacCartneyDescribe your initial impression of AIM in five words or less.
Challenging, revealing, and fun experience.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about the Academy that you didn’t already know?
The most interesting thing I learned was the standard and mechanics of Swab Summer. Before AIM, I didn’t fully understand how much is expected of the Swabs, from memorizing Indoc, keeping perfect posture, to staying in formation when running. Learning the basic expectations of Swab Summer through AIM was really helpful because it gave me a glimpse into the life of a cadet and confirmed that the Coast Guard Academy is where I want to be.

What was your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge for me was not to look down when I am walking or standing. At AIM, all of us had to look straight ahead at all times, which was more difficult than it seemed. I overcame it by first focusing on looking straight ahead while standing. Then, I gradually reminded myself to keep my head up and look straight ahead while walking until it became natural.

Looking back, would you have done anything different to prepare yourself for AIM?
One thing I would have done differently to prepare is to run on hillier terrain. The Academy has many hills, and preparing for that specifically would have helped. Aside from physical fitness preparation, another thing I would have done differently is to pack lighter. I brought many unnecessary items, which made it difficult to bring my luggage up the stairs.

Can you identify a noticeable difference in yourself after attending AIM? If so, what?
Yes, I do notice a difference in myself after attending AIM. I am more responsible not just for myself but also for the people around me. At AIM, we had to make sure that not only did we have everything we needed, but that our roommates did as well. As a platoon, we also made sure nobody was left behind, and we all helped each other as much as we could. AIM made me more aware of the importance of supporting the people around me.

Would you recommend attending AIM? Why?
I would definitely recommend AIM to anyone interested! It was an amazing week. Even though it started out difficult, it became easier over time, and I got to experience things that very few people do, such as sailing and seeing a rescue helicopter up close. I also learned more about how to prepare for Swab Summer and what is expected. Finally, being able to talk to the Cadre and see the types of people who attend the Academy strengthened my decision to apply and, hopefully, attend the Coast Guard Academy.
