Phoenix Booker: Post-AIM Reflection

Phoenix Booker | July 20, 2026

Phoenix BookerDescribe your initial impression of AIM in five words or less.
A necessary challenge.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about the Academy that you didn’t already know?
The most interesting thing that I learned about the Academy was the variety of majors that the institution provides. Though I did know that there were many engineering majors. I did not know how different they were from one another while still retaining similar elements.

What was your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge that I faced during my week at AIM was receiving large amounts of information within the initial days and having to memorize the names as well as the positions of the staff. I overcame this challenge by constantly reading the concepts in my bowsprit and quizzing myself on the names of the staff members.

Looking back, would you have done anything different to prepare yourself for AIM?
Looking back I would not change how I prepared myself for AIM because the process is a learning experience on its own. There are things you encounter that you can’t prepare for.

Can you identify a noticeable difference in yourself after attending AIM? If so, what?
Some differences that I have found in myself after attending AIM have been an increase in productivity in my day to day. I feel more organized and more focused in my activities. My interest in the Coast Guard Academy has grown after attending AIM. I am now focused on applying and hopefully attending next year.

Would you recommend attending AIM? Why?
I would definitely recommend attending AIM because the experience gained during this program will help you gain a better understanding of campus life, learn about leadership, how to perform under pressure and learn the requirements of what it takes to be a cadet in the Academy.
