What was the most interesting thing you learned about the Academy that you didn’t already know?
Before attending, I knew the Academy was demanding, but I did not fully understand how much leadership is built into everyday cadet life. I was also surprised by how close-knit the Academy community felt. Even though the environment was challenging, we pushed one another to improve and succeed as a team. AIM showed me that the Academy develops leaders through daily experiences, not only through classroom instruction, and that made me even more interested in attending.
What was your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge during AIM was managing the physical demands of the week, the summer heat, and fatigue. We overcame it as Charlie Company together by focusing on one task at a time, maintaining a positive attitude, and encouraging each other. By the end of the week, I was proud that I had pushed through the difficult moments and proved that I could perform under demanding conditions.
Looking back, would you have done anything different to prepare yourself for AIM?
I don’t believe there is any way to fully prepare for AIM because it’s such a unique experience. JROTC Drill Team and varsity sports gave me a strong foundation physically and mentally, and they definitely helped. AIM still tested me though, but I felt ready to take on those challenges and learn from them.
Can you identify a noticeable difference in yourself after attending AIM? If so what?
AIM took a goal I already had and made it even stronger. Before attending, I knew I wanted to apply to the Coast Guard Academy, but after AIM, I realized it was where I truly belonged. What stood out to me most was learning that Coast Guard officers begin leading and carrying out real missions as soon as they graduate. Knowing that I could make a meaningful difference from day one has made me even more determined to earn an appointment and become a Coast Guard officer.
Would you recommend attending AIM? Why?
Absolutely. It gives you an authentic experience of Academy life. You learn a lot about yourself, build lifelong friendships with AIMsters who share the same goals, and leave with a much better understanding of what it means to be a cadet. It is an experience you’ll never forget!
