LCDR Kristen Zelman is currently a Mathematics Instructor as part of the rotating military faculty. Originally from Kings Park, New York, she graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 2014, majoring in Marine and Environmental Sciences. She received her first orders on a 225’ buoy tender, USCGC MAPLE (WLB-207), as a Deck Watch Officer, in Sitka, Alaska. Her Response-Ashore career encompasses being the Enforcement Division Chief and Assistant Incident Management Division Chief at Sector Anchorage, Anchorage, Alaska, and Sector Juneau in Juneau, Alaska, respectively. Her primary duties included overseeing the missions of response sub-units, coordinating law enforcement special operations, directing incident responses, and revising area contingency plans. As an intricate member of the Incident Command System, she was deployed to aid in Operation Warp Speed in Honolulu, Hawaii and Operation Allies Welcome in Fort Lee, Virginia, supporting and facilitating the planning cycle for command staff. She received a Master of Science in Biostatistics at the University of Connecticut and uses her skillset to drive academic placement decisions at the Coast Guard Academy. Interested in many hobbies, LCDR Zelman enjoys gardening, baking, hiking, and cruising on her motorcycle, to name a few.
