Emma MacCartney: Pre-AIM Reflection

Emma MacCartney | July 6, 2026

Emma MacCartneyHow did you hear of the Coast Guard Academy?
I first heard about the Coast Guard Academy through my grandfather. He attended the Academy and has given me information about Academy life and what it was like to serve as an officer. After looking more in depth at the Coast Guard Academy itself through tours and attending Bears Day, I found it offered strong academics, athletics, leadership, and opportunity to serve.

What is the #1 thing you’ve done to prepare for AIM?
For the past few months, I have been mostly focused on preparing physically, especially training my upper body. I have been training 3–5 days a week for the fitness exam and the overall physical demands of AIM.

What do you expect to have in common with your fellow AIMsters?
I anticipate that my fellow AIMsters and I will share a similar drive, discipline, and goal of serving our country. Additionally, I expect all of us to have a deep interest in what cadet life is like at the Academy.

What are you most looking forward to?
I am looking forward to being pushed to my limits and seeing how I would handle life at the Academy. I am also excited to meet new people from all over who share similar interests to mine and could potentially be my peers.

Any hesitations about your AIM week?
I do not have any hesitations about AIM week. I am excited to be pushed, learn life lessons, and discover if the Coast Guard is right for me and my future.

What do your peers think about your service academy aspirations?
My peers are very impressed and supportive of my service academy aspirations. They understand the rigor and discipline of a service academy and have wished me the best of luck at AIM.
