Ivan Cuadrado: Post-AIM Reflection

Ivan Cuadrado | August 7, 2026

Ivan CuadradoDescribe your initial impression of AIM in five words or less.

A VERY messy hair day.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about the Academy that you didn’t already know?

There were so many things I learned about the Academy that I didn’t already know; most of which made me want to go even more. What I found the most interesting was just how much you travel and get to do with the Coast Guard before you even graduate from the academy.

What was your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?

My biggest challenge was getting over my fear of disappointing others, specifically the cadre. I just had to keep telling myself, “It’s not personal,” “It’s only to prepare me,” “All you need to do is give 110% effort all the time and that’s all you can do.”

Looking back, would you have done anything different to prepare yourself for AIM?

Well in terms of training, the only thing I would have done differently would have been more calisthenics. However, what I really wish I did, being I got to the academy early, was not go back out and have a VERY large meal beforehand.

Can you identify a noticeable difference in yourself after attending AIM?

If so, what? Two things, I’ve been a lot less picky or needy about things in general. Secondly, I haven’t left the light on in my room, or any room I’m leaving, once since leaving AIM.

Would you recommend attending AIM? Why?

I would ABSOLUTELY recommend attending AIM. Even though it was pretty hard for me at first, it made the funny or relaxing moments that much more enjoyable and even though it was only a week, it was a very rewarding experience. AIM showed me what I’m capable of, and again, despite the hard parts, it only made me want to attend the academy even more.
