Describe your initial impression of AIM in five words or less.
Challenging.
What was the most interesting thing you learned about the Academy that you didn’t already know?
I gained valuable insights about the Academy that were previously unknown to me. One notable discovery is that during 2nd class (2/c) year, cadets at the Coast Guard Academy can study at another branch’s academy for a semester. In addition, the Coast Guard Academy boasts a wide array of clubs, for instance, the aviation club. The Academy provides a wealth of opportunities that may not be readily apparent to many.
What was your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?
My primary challenge lay in acclimating to the structured environment, authoritative interactions, and rigorous discipline imposed by the cadre. Although I initially found this environment disagreeable, I later apprehended its underlying rationale. With the passage of time, I developed a deep appreciation for the ordered regimen implemented by the cadre, recognizing its role in preparing me for the upcoming phases of the program. Despite the arduous initiation, their methodical training proved instrumental in facilitating my progression and readiness for the program’s subsequent segments.
Looking back, would you have done anything different to prepare yourself for AIM?
I wouldn’t have changed much about my preparation for AIM. While I could have put in more effort to ready myself for the PFE, I was satisfied with my score. Moreover, regardless of one’s entry level into the program, the cadre will get you to the level of your fellow AIMsters.
Can you identify a noticeable difference in yourself after attending AIM? If so, what?
Upon completing the AIM program, I’ve observed a notable transformation in myself. I now adhere to a higher standard, both mentally and physically, and have discovered the ability to push myself further. I’ve also developed a deep respect for individuals who have undergone training at the Coast Guard Academy and now place significant value on teamwork.
Would you recommend attending AIM? Why?
I highly recommend attending the Academy Introduction Mission (AIM) program. For me, AIM provided an insightful representation of life at the Coast Guard Academy. It is beneficial for anyone with even a remote interest in the Academy, as it offers a realistic week-long experience without requiring any commitment. Furthermore, the knowledge gained during this immersive week is invaluable and well worth the investment of time.
