Describe your initial impression of AIM in five words or less.
Challenging.
What was the most interesting thing you learned about the Academy that you didn’t already know?
I learned more about Swab Summer, what it’s actually like, and the various summer opportunities available at the Academy such as AIM, Swab Summer cadre leadership, internships, and sailing aboard the Eagle.
What was your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?
The hardest part was greeting cadres as we entered the wardroom for meals. We had to shout loudly, “keep our eyes on the boat” instead of looking at the cadre, and still know their names. I felt dizzy from yelling so much, and since I had never yelled like that before, it was completely new to me. Over time, I got used to it, started using my diaphragm to project better, and became more confident with repetition.
Looking back, would you have done anything different to prepare yourself for AIM?
There’s not much you can fully prepare for, but I would have focused more on physical conditioning, especially endurance, standing for long periods, and improving my overall PFE performance.
Can you identify a noticeable difference in yourself after attending AIM? If so, what?
Yes. I became mentally tougher, more disciplined, and more confident under pressure. I also have a clearer understanding of what Academy life demands and what kind of leader I want to become.
Would you recommend attending AIM? Why?
100% yes. AIM is unlike any other summer program. In just one week you learn so much about yourself the Academy and what it takes to lead. You also meet incredible people and build relationships that can last a lifetime.
