Zareb Gonzalez: Pre-AIM Reflection

Zareb GonzalezHow did you hear of the Coast Guard Academy?

I first heard about the Coast Guard through YouTube, specifically from videos by Smarter Every Day, which describe some of the missions the Coast Guard undertakes. I was especially fascinated by the engineering behind the helicopters used. Later, I found out that I have a distant cousin who is a pilot for the Coast Guard who got there through the Academy. This inspired me to learn more about the Academy and what opportunities it offers.

What is the #1 thing you’ve done to prepare for AIM?

In the couple of months leading up to AIM, I have been vigorously preparing for the physical aspect of the week. I have been consistently training push-ups, sit-ups, and tempo runs to ensure that I am as physically fit as possible going into the week.

What do you expect to have in common with your fellow AIMsters?

I expect to share a strong sense of motivation and desire to learn more about what the Academy has to offer. We will likely have similar interests in teamwork as well as pushing ourselves and each other to grow through the challenges that we face, both mentally and  physically.

What are you most looking forward to?

I am looking forward to seeing what life is like in the Academy. I’m excited to partake in the various hands-on activities and to challenge myself in ways I may never have. This will also be a great way to enhance my leadership skills and learn more about myself through the process, as well as make connections with others who have the same interests.

Any hesitations about your AIM week?

The only thing I am nervous about is how physically demanding AIM will be. I’m not sure if I will be fully prepared in that aspect or not, and I’m not sure how vigorous the physical activity will be.

What do your peers think about your service academy aspirations?

Everyone that I’ve talked to was very impressed by the fact that I was interested in attending a service academy, all saying that it takes a certain person to do so. All my closest friends are aspiring to be a part of a military service, and we all push each other to do so. All my more distant friends in school are not surprised by the fact that I want to pursue the Academy, as they all say I would be cut out for that kind of life.
