Describe your initial impression of AIM in five words or less.
Opportunity that shapes a lifetime.
What was the most interesting thing you learned about the Academy that you didn’t already know?
The most interesting academic detail I learned about the Academy was that they would be offering a new major for the class of 2028. I believe it is super cool that the interdisciplinary engineering major (IDE) allows cadets to study a wider array of engineering focuses. By allowing a more expansive course selection through the IDE major, cadets can select areas of interest that relate directly to the Coast Guard’s mission.
What was your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge I encountered was trying to absorb all that the Coast Guard Academy has to offer while also keeping a professional and formal attitude. It was hard to look around at the academy and all the different things it provides while in a braced-up environment. Later throughout the week, though, the AIMsters were permitted to relax more often, which allowed me to see everything and ask plenty of questions.
Looking back, would you have done anything different to prepare yourself for AIM?
After completing AIM, I would have been more prepared if I had learned the different indoctrination elements beforehand. It was challenging to learn this information with limited time, but I was able to accomplish the task through repetition and consistently studying. Going into the program with a little bit more knowledge would have been very helpful to have.
Can you identify a noticeable difference in yourself after attending AIM? If so, what?
I noticed that I am no longer conflicted about which service academy I want to attend upon graduating from high school. Through the AIM experience, my passion and desire to attend the Coast Guard Academy was strengthened immensely. I was able to envision myself pursuing a livelihood at the Academy as well as what life is like as an officer commissioned in the service. I have now made it my top priority and goal to apply and get accepted into this great institution.
Would you recommend attending AIM? Why?
I highly recommend attending AIM. This program is designed for any person looking to challenge themself and learn what the true mission of the United States Coast Guard Academy is. AIM helps many individuals who are seeking to attend a military service academy determine whether or not this lifestyle is the right fit. In addition, the AIM program fosters many great values within all of the discipline and challenges that the attendees overcome throughout the week. The lessons learned are applicable to anyone’s daily life and if implemented, can contribute to future success.
