Describe your initial impression of AIM in five words or less.
Not what I was expecting.
What was the most interesting thing you learned about the Academy that you didn’t already know?
The most interesting thing I learned about the Academy that I didn’t already know was that the major you choose does not affect the service you are selected for during the five years of service after graduating from the Academy. This changes things for me because before I wanted to be an engineer but also wanted to do aviation after graduating, and I thought that wouldn’t be possible, but now that I know the major you choose doesn’t affect your service I have much more enthusiasm in wanting to be an engineer.
What was your biggest challenge and how did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge throughout the week was being persistent in yelling or “sounding off.” I overcame this challenge by focusing on using my diaphragm while yelling and keeping a positive mindset knowing that the yelling wouldn’t last forever. It was also comforting knowing that everyone around me was going through the same thing!
Looking back, would you have done anything different to prepare yourself for AIM?
Yes, I would have looked over the Indoctrination elements and been familiar with them, so I could’ve memorized the Mission and the Ethos faster. Along with that, I would have prepared many questions to ask during the engineering and admissions sessions, so I didn’t have any pressure of trying to think of them on the spot. Besides those things, doing the Fitness Preparation Guide helped me tremendously and would be smart for any future AIMsters to look at and do.
Can you identify a noticeable difference in yourself after attending AIM? If so, what?
The most noticeable difference in myself after attending AIM is how much I really want to be at the Academy. This week was a true experience of what the Academy would actually be like and it really helped me know that I still want to come. It also gives you a great appreciation for all the little things in life like being able to eat relaxed and walk without being in formation.
Would you recommend attending AIM? Why?
I would definitely recommend attending AIM because of the accurate representation it gives AIMsters about what the Academy and Swab Summer will be like. It will really solidify your decision on wanting to go to the Academy, which is exactly what it did for me. Because of AIM, I have really confirmed my decision on wanting to go to the Academy and I recommend it to anyone who may be struggling with the question of if it is right for you. It also gives you the chance to meet many cadre who are very nice and want to help and make it the best experience for you, and other AIMsters who may be your future classmates or even shipmates one day.
