On a real-world education
The Management Major has taught me an immense number of lessons and habits through both business and leadership classes. Majoring in Management has prepared me to be an effective leader in the Coast Guard, while also preparing me for my time in the civilian sector when my time comes. With a great mix of classes with topics covering finance, project management and leadership related classes, I know my time is being spent well at CGA and I will soon be ready to be an effective officer with a practical skillset, ready to lead at my upcoming unit and beyond.
On the faculty
With the three years I have spent at the Academy so far, I have met some amazing instructors that have poured into me regarding both my education and professional development. The number of available mentors at school is truly a blessing, and I have been fortunate enough to learn so much from many of my instructors. With such a great student-to-faculty ratio, instructors have no trouble helping explain work to me or taking time to offer professional advice as I soon enter the fleet and encounter a new set of challenges.
Expanding opportunities as a Management Major
As a Management Major, the credit load towards my final year has enabled me to select career developing electives that have advanced my skillsets in multiple ways. Additionally, my classes have enabled me to participate in other leadership activities within the Academy, giving me hands on leadership experience, which is an extremely valuable opportunity as a leader in the Coast Guard and beyond.
Within the Management Major, there have been numerous opportunities to participate in luncheons, conferences, small meetings, and more with some incredible guest speakers both within the military and civilian sector. As a Management Major, taking part in those opportunities has contributed greatly to my professional development and heavily impacted my networking skills.
On the future
Graduating as a Management Major from the Academy has already set me up in a great position to lead within the Coast Guard and beyond. I am extremely excited to apply my skillset to the fleet and future ashore jobs. Acquiring these skills at an early age has put me well ahead of what is expected out of a young adult, building my mindset as a Coast Guard officer to lead with confidence and face the daily challenges that we are called to take care of. Outside of the military, I know that my experience from the Management Major and the Coast Guard itself will translate in an amazing way, giving me peace of mind when it comes time to retire my uniform and lead in another capacity.
