
Captain Jeff Janaro serves as a faculty member in the United States Coast Guard Academy’s School of Leadership and Management. His previous assignment was as the Academy’s Staff Judge Advocate (General Counsel). His prior legal assignments were as the Coast Guard’s Chief of Defense Services in the Office of Legal Assistance and Defense, as Deputy, Response Law Division in the Office of Maritime and International Law, and as an embedded trial defense counsel with the Navy JAG Corps at the Washington Navy Yard.
Prior to entering the Coast Guard Legal Program, Captain Janaro served in four Coast Guard Cutters, commanding USCGC ALBACORE and USCGC FLYINGFISH. Other afloat assignments include serving as Deck Watch Officer and Law Enforcement Officer aboard USCGC ESCANABA, and as Operations Officer and Navigator of USCGC EAGLE, “America’s Tall Ship.” His assignments ashore were as a navigation instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy and logistics officer at Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound.
Captain Janaro earned his Juris Doctor with honors from The George Washington University Law School and is a member of the Florida Bar. He holds a Master of Liberal Arts (International Relations) from Harvard University, a Master of Public Administration from Strayer University, and a Bachelor of Science from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. He was a National Security and Foreign Policy Fellow in the 2020-2021 Massachusetts Institute of Technology Seminar XXI Program and is a Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Captain Janaro and his wife, Sarah, reside in Connecticut with their two young daughters.
