Huston Helwig

Goldsboro, Maryland – Class of 2019 Major: Mechanical Engineering

Huston Helwig enjoys the hands-on opportunities that a Mechanical Engineering degree at the Academy provides. Engineering design projects allow him to connect and apply what is learned in the classroom to the real world.

On the rigor of the major

“The mechanical engineering courses are fast paced. I learn something new every day in class, and each concept builds on one another, so you have to understand each one in order to successfully progress through the course.”

On faculty support

“Faculty members are very personable and are willing to go the extra mile to ensure the success of every student, even if the student is not in that professor’s class.”

On choosing to study ME

“The major is rigorous, but very rewarding. The major is applicable to both the Coast Guard and the civilian world, which allows for many opportunities after graduation.”
