Tiffany Smythe, Ph.D.
Dr. Tiffany Smythe is a marine social scientist and policy specialist. She has over 20 years of experience as a practitioner, teacher and scholar of ocean and coastal policy. At USCGA, Tiffany teaches courses including Politics of the Ocean, Coastal Hazards, Ocean Energy, Maritime Governance, and Environmental Policy. Tiffany’s research focuses on marine governance arrangements and community experiences and attitudes related to ocean use conflicts, offshore energy development, ocean multi-use, and the blue economy. She has over 23 peer-reviewed publications which have been published in journals including Marine Policy, Energy Research and Social Science, Ocean and Coastal Management, and Environmental Communication. Tiffany has master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island as well as bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Columbia University. Tiffany is an Affiliated Faculty with the USCGA Center for Arctic Study and Policy, and holds an adjunct appointment as Associate Research Professor at the University of Rhode Island. She is also a merchant mariner and holds a 100-ton U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license.
