Interdisciplinary Engineering

The Interdisciplinary Engineering major prepares future officers for careers across a wide spectrum of Coast Guard missions. This major draws from multiple disciplines and provides students with a broad background to work in numerous engineering fields, while also preparing graduates for service in most other CG and civilian career paths.
  • Interdisciplinary Engineering students will be well prepared to pursue a Professional Engineer license and graduate school in engineering or other disciplines
  • The students will customize their plan of study to suit their interest working with their academic advisor
  • In the senior-level capstone course sequence, students design an engineering system to meet the needs of the Coast Guard
  • As a Coast Guard Engineer, you will have your choice of exciting career paths when you graduate!

Areas of Study

Interdisciplinary Engineering students will complete required engineering core courses supplemented with a series of engineering and free electives.  This flexibility allows students to take courses in areas of interest related to Coast Guard missions and sub-disciplines.  Potential focus areas include, but are not limited to, Aviation/Aerospace Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Marine Safety Engineering, Cybersecurity, Engineering Management, Industrial Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Power Systems & Control Engineering, and Systems Engineering.

Resources

Interdisciplinary Engineering is housed in the School of Engineering and Cyber Systems, allowing easy access to hands-on education and use of our power lab, circulating water channel, wind tunnel, towing tank, and lab facilities across the engineering disciplines.  Partnering with other departments both within and outside of engineering and cyber systems allows students access to enriching educational resources.  A makerspace capstone room to support the school and Interdisciplinary Engineering students is in development.
