Marine and Environmental Sciences Educational Objectives

The Marine and Environmental Sciences Program Educational Objectives include producing graduates who within several years after graduation:

  • Apply and clearly communicate scientific expertise to achieve operational success in the US Coast Guard.
  • Excel in a variety of career paths providing appropriate expertise in the maritime domain as a professional scientist.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to intellectual and professional growth through activities and accomplishments such as graduate study, professional licensure, professional society activity, and/or continuing education.

Student Outcomes

The Student Outcomes support the Program Educational Outcomes.

Graduates will be able to demonstrate:

  1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve broadly defined technical or scientific problems by applying knowledge of mathematics and science and/or technical topics to areas relevant to the discipline.
  2. An ability to formulate or design a system, process, procedure or program to meet desired needs.
  3. An ability to develop and conduct experiments or test hypotheses, analyze and interpret data and use scientific judgment to draw conclusions.
  4. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
  5. An ability to understand ethical and professional responsibilities and the impact of technical and/or scientific solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
  6. An ability to function effectively on teams that establish goals, plan tasks, meet deadlines, and analyze risk and uncertainty.

In addition to the Student Outcomes and Program Educational Objectives, the Marine and Environmental Sciences major produces graduates who demonstrate:

  1. An ability to apply knowledge of chemistry, physics, biology, earth sciences, calculus, and statistics to evaluate the environment.
  2. An understanding of the basic principles of sustainability, environmental ethics, economics, and the application of environmental science in policy formulation and environmental resources management.
