Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering

NA&ME graduates serve as Coast Guard officers in a wide spectrum of Coast Guard missions and careers. The program provides graduates a solid foundation for professional engineering practice, both in and outside the Coast Guard. Many NA&ME majors go on to pursue post-graduate study in naval architecture, marine engineering, mechanical engineering and other related fields, as well as a wide range of other subjects and degrees.

NA&ME Career Paths

For NA&ME graduates, there are two primary engineering sub-specialties: Marine Safety Engineering and Naval Engineering. But with their extensive training and education, NA&ME graduates are well prepared, and highly sought after, for a wide range of careers and assignment opportunities.

Marine Safety Engineering (Prevention)

Marine Safety professionals promote global maritime safety, security and environmental protection. This is achieved through the inspection of ships and boats, examinations of foreign vessels, waterways management, marine casualty investigations, and technical engineering jobs involving the design and construction of leading-edge ships.

Naval Engineering

The Coast Guard Naval Engineering program delivers a fleet of safe, effective and reliable Coast Guard ships and boats. Naval Engineers are involved in the complete lifecycle of these assets, including the design, acquisition, sustainment and disposal of ships and boats.

Other Career Opportunities

NA&ME graduates find numerous career options in the Coast Guard as well as in professional industry. Career paths include: Ocean (civil) engineering, operations afloat, operations ashore, aviation, law enforcement, financial-related duties and more.

NA&ME graduates are well positioned to enter industry when they leave the Coast Guard, where jobs are plentiful in this field.
